African American National Biography, accessed February 19, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Lipscomb, Mance; guitarist, popular singer; born 09 April 1895 in Navasota, Texas, United States; worked full-time as a farmer; moved to Houston and went to work for a lumber company (1956); got injured, moved back to Navasota; began playing guitar and singing at weekend country dances and picnics; researchers, Mack McCormick and Chris Strachwitz heard about him (1960) and recorded him for almost five hours in his home which formed the basis for Lipscomb's debut LP on Arhoolie Records; played at the Texas Heritage Festival in Houston, initiating a steady schedule of performances: Berkeley (1961-1963), Monterey (1963), Newport (1965), the Festival of American Folklife in Washington, D.C. (1968), Ann Arbor (1970); featured in the Les Blank film “A Well Spent Life” (1971), Philadelphia (1972); died 30 January 1976 in Navasota, Texas, United States)
