Was co-chairman of Otdel po operativnoĭ rabote, then chief of Pervyĭ otdel Upravlenie po borʹbe s khishchenii︠a︡mi sot︠s︡ialisticheskoĭ sobstvennosti MVD SSSR. In Jan. 1990 was chosen Ministr vnutrennikh del of Azerbaijan SSR. In Jun. 1990 was chosen Ministr vnutrennikh del RSFSR with the rank of general-lieutenant of internal service. Refused to take part in the coup d'etat of Aug. 1991 and participated in the arrest of members of the GKChP. On 23 Aug. 1991 was chosen Ministr vnutrennikh del SSSR. In late 1991 assisted in organizing the proposed Ministerstvo bezopasnosti i vnutrennikh del RSFSR, and in Dec. 1991 was appointed Ministr MBVD. After the Russian parliament rejected the formation of the MBVD Barannikov became the general director of the Agenstvo federalʹnoĭ bezopasnosti RSFSR. Since Feb. 1992 he has been Ministr bezopasnoti Rossii. In June 1992 he was given the rank of Marshal. He is also a member of the Sovet bezopasnosti RF. He now resides in Moscow)
