(Сокаль = Sokalʹ) Ukr. rad. ent︠s︡ykl.: v. 10, p. 292 (Sokalʹ; city in Lʹvivsʹka oblastʹ; first noted in sources of the year 1411 when it was part of the Belzʹko kni︠a︡zivstvo. After the 1772 partition of Poland, as part of Western Galicia, Sokalʹ was annexed by Austria. In 1919 it was incorporated into Poland, and in 1939 it became part of Ukraine) Ukraïna [MAP] 1992: (Sokalʹ; in Lʹvivsʹka oblastʹ) Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 4, p. 811 (Sokal, a city and raion center in Lviv oblast. It was first mentioned in historical documents of 1411 as part of the Belz Principality. From 1462 it was the county center of Belz Voivodeship in Poland. In 1524 the town was rebuilt on the other side of the Buh River and its fortress was reinforced. After the 1772 partition of Poland, Sokal was annexed by Austria where it became a county center of the Galician crownland. In 1919 Poland recaptured Sokal. The Polish government then established the Sokal border between Galicia and Volhynia.
