Entered the U.S. Marine Corps on January 18, 1801, where he served two tours in the Mediterranean. When President Thomas Jefferson ordered an attack in 1805 on the Bay of Tripoli to release Americans held prisoner, O'Bannon led the expedition. Retired from the Marines in 1807, he joined the U.S. Army as a captain, then his regiment was disbanded in March 1809. Moved to Logan County, Ky. Served in the Kentucky House in 1812, 1817, 1820 and 1821 and in the Kentucky Senate from 1824 to 1826. Died September 12, 1850.) |
