Orthodox bishop, he studied at the Kievan Mohyla Academy and the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1725 he was consecrated Bishop of Pskov, and was elevated to the office of Archbishop of Kiev by the tsar in 1731. After convincing church authorities to restore Kiev Eparchy as a Metropoly, he took the title Metropolitan of Kiev, Halych, and Little Russia in 1743.
