| Found in | Izi︠u︡m, 1994: t.p. (Izi︠u︡m) p. 3, etc. (the city was established in 1681 by the Kharkivsʹkyĭ polk although this area was settled much earlier. A Izi︠u︡msʹka storoz︠h︡ova was first mentioned in historical sources of 1571, and in sources of 1651 an Izi︠u︡msʹkyĭ okop is mentioned. In the 16th cent. or earlier on the cite of present-day Izi︠u︡m was the Tatar fortification Guzun-Kurgan. In the 17th cent. Izi︠u︡m belonged to the Kharʹkovskiĭ polk but it was soon made part of the newly formed Izi︠u︡mskiĭ polk. In 1780 , with the establishement of the Kharʹkovskoe namestnichestvo, Izi︠u︡m became an uyezd town) Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 2, p. 375 (Izium [Izjum], a city under oblast jurisdiction and raion center in Kharkiv oblast, on the right bank of the Donets River. A settlement was established there in the second quarter of the 17th century; in 1681 it was fortified by Kharkiv regiment's Col. H. Donets, in order to defend against the Tatars. From 1695 to 1765 Izium was a regimental capital in Slobidska Ukraine. It was a county town in Kharkiv vicegerency (1780-1786) and in Slobidska Ukraine (1796-1835) and Kharkiv (1835-1917) gubernias) Rad. ent︠s︡ykl. istoriï Ukraïny, 1970: v. 2, p. 242 (Ізюм = Izi︠u︡m, city in Kharkiv. obl. URSR, and center of Izi︠u︡msʹkyĭ raĭon. It arose during the second quarter of the 17th cent. In 1681 Cossacks of the Kharkivsʹkyĭ polk built a fortress there on the Izi︠u︡msʹkyĭ shli︠a︡kh (Izium Road). From 1685-1765 Izi︠u︡m was the center of the Izi︠u︡msʹkyĭ polk. During 1765-1780 Izi︠u︡m became part of the Slobidsʹko-Ukraïnsʹka hubernii︠a︡. From 1780 it was a county town in the Kharkivsʹke namisnyt︠s︡tvo. From 1796 to 1835 it was again part of the Slobidsʹko-Ukraïnsʹka hubernii︠a︡. From 1835 Izi︠u︡m was part of the Kharkivsʹka hubernii︠a︡. In Feb. 1918 Soviet power was established, but in April 1918 Izi︠u︡m was occupied by Austro-Hungarian forces. After a brief occupation by Petlura's Directory the city was taken by Red Army Forces, only to be seized by Denikin's army, which was not ousted until Dec. 1919.
