URSR. Established at the end of the 16th cent. as Mohyliv on territory seized by Poland. In 1648 B. Khmelʹnyt︠s︡ʹkyĭ liberated Mohyliv and it became part of the Mohylivsʹkyĭ polk. In 1649 it was transfered into the Brat︠s︡lavsʹkyĭ polk. In 1667 Mohyliv was ceded to Poland. From 1672 to 1699 Mohyliv was under Turkish control, and in 1699 it was again returned to Poland. After the reunification of Right-Bank Ukraine with Russia in 1793 the town became part of the Brat︠s︡lavsʹke namisnyt︠s︡tvo, and from 1795 it was part of the Podilʹsʹka hubernii︠a︡. During 1917-1920 the town was fought over by Austro-Hungarian, White, Red Army, and Polish forces. On July 6, 1920 the Red Army liberated Mohyliv from Poland, and during that year renamed the city Mohyliv-Podilʹsʹkyĭ . Since 1932 it has been in the Vinn. oblastʹ) Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 3, p. 435 (Mohyliv-Podilskyi [Mohyliv-Podil's'kyj]. A city and raion center in Vinnytsia oblast. In 1595 S. Potocki founded a town at the site of Ivankivtsi village and named it after his father-in-law, B. Mohyla (Movilă), a prince of Moldavia. During the 17th to 19th cents. the town was known under various names, such as Mohyliv, Mohyliv-na-Dnistri, and Mohyliv-Dnistrovskyi. In 1648 the town became a regiment center in B. Khmelnytsky's Cossack state. Mohyliv-Podilskyi was destroyed during the Cossack-Polish Wars of 1649 and 1654. From 1672 to 1699 it was captured by the Turks. In 1795 Mohyliv came under Russian rule and became a county center in Podilia gubernia.
