Dictionary of African Biography, accessed March 16, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Ranavalona I; Ramavo; born Rabodonandrianampoinimerina; queen; born c.1790 in Madagascar; conspired to take the throne by force (1828); expanded Imerina's military state and bureaucracy; employed the Latin alphabet to write the Malagasy language and bureaucracy of Imerina posted trained secretaries in all its major administrative centers; British missionaries from the London Missionary Society began baptizing converts shortly after she became queen and conversions multiplied quickly; she prohibited missionaries from teaching and preaching their religion and many were forced to leave (1835-1836); cut off trading ties with merchants from Mascarenes (1845); died Audust 1861 in Antananarivo, Madagascar)
