Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 4, p. 284 (Putyliv or Putyla; a town in the Putylivka River Valley and a raion center in Chernivtsi oblast. It was first mentioned in historical documents in 1501 under its origianl name, Putyliv. At that time it was under Moldavian rule. In 1774 Bukovyna along with Putyliv was annexed by Austria. From the end of the 18th century the town was called Putyla-Storonets, and in 1920 it was annexed by the Rumanians. In 1940 it was annexed by the Ukrainian SSR)
