Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: pages 956-957 (John Stuart Williams, Confederate general and political leader, born in Montgomery County, Ky. on June 29, 1818. Attended the Houston Seminary in Bourbon County, Ky. and graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1838. Studied law with Maj. Thomas Elliott in Paris, Ky. and was admitted to the bar in 1840. Practiced law in Paris, Ky. for five years, until 1845. Served in the Mexican-American War. Elected to one term in the General Assembly of Kentucky, 1851-1853 and again, 1873-1875. Served in the Crimean War as an observer. Joined the Confederate Army as a colonel in 1861 and was made a brigadier general. Returned to Kentucky after the war and was elected to the U.S. Senate, serving from March 4, 1879 to March 3, 1885. Died in Mt. Sterling, Ky. on July 17, 1898.)
