Place names database, via Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre WWW site, Oct. 1, 2002 (Fort Good Hope, settlement, 66°15ʹ25ʺ128°38ʹ00ʺ; North West Co. fort was erected in 1804, on the left bank of the Mackenzie River. After the union of 1821, it was moved by the Hudson's Bay Co. in 1825, about 100 miles farther upstream to the south to Manitou Island near the Ramparts. Good Hope was the most northerly post of the North West Co. When the fort on Manitou Island was destroyed by ice in 1836, the Hudson's Bay Co. rebuilt (1836-39), on the mainland at the present location on the right bank. The NWT Language Bureau indicated that the traditional North Slavey name for this community is Radeyjljkoe, which means 'rapids.')
