African American National Biography, accessed December 21, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (St. Cyr, Johnny; John Alexander St. Cyr; jazz musician, guitarist, banjoist; born 17 April 1890 in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States; played with many famous bands and musicians including the Superior and Olympia brass bands; began his career as a guitarist; built a banjo-guitar; went to work as a riverboat musician (1918- 1921); performed with many of the best New Orleans jazz musicians, including Louis Armstrong; moved to Chicago and recorded with Joe Oliver's Creole Jazz Band (1923); recorded with Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers (1926); played on Louis Armstrong's famous Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings' (1925-1927); performed at the Disney land riverboat exhibit (1961-1966); died 17 June 1966 in Los Angeles, California, United States)
