Dictionary of African Biography, accessed November 14, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Apithy, Sourou Migan; political figure; born 08 April 1913 in Porto Novo, Benin; studied accounting and politics at the École Libre des Sciences Politiques; received degree in accounting from the École National d'Organisation Économique et Sociale; served in a French artillery (1939-1940); worked as an accountant for a French company, Dakar; ran under the auspices of Section Française d'Internationale Ouvriére (SFIO) party; joined the radical coalition of African parties known as the Rassemblement Démocratique Africaine (RDA) (1946); later chose to join Independants d'Outre-Mer alliance; served in the Beninese territorial assembly (1946-1960); member of the High Council of French West Africa (1947-1957); formed his own party, Parti Républicain Dahoméen (PRD) (1951); was a mayor of Porto Novo (1956); president of the Beninese parliament (1957); minister of finances (1960); cofounder of the Parti Dahoméen de l'Unité (PUD); Beninese military officers made him the new president (1964); after a military coup in 1965 he fled to Paris; later was placed under house arrest and remained a prisoner until (1981); died 12 November 1989 in Paris, France)
