Wikipedia, 3 August 2011 (Keiko; born approximately 1976, died December 12, 2003; male orca actor who starred in the film Free Willy; captured near Iceland in 1979, later sold to Marineland in Ontario; performed in parks in North America) March 16, 2017 (Keiko (orca); Keiko (earlier Siggi) (c. 1976-December 12, 2003) was a male orca who portrayed Willy in the 1993 film Free Willy; captured near Reyðarfjörður, Iceland in 1979 and sold to the Icelandic aquarium in Hafnarfjörður. Three years later he was sold to Marineland in Ontario where he first started performing for the public and developed skin lesions indicative of poor health. He was then sold to Reino Aventura (now named Six Flags Mexico), an amusement park in Mexico City, in 1985; the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Oregon was given over $7 million to construct facilities to return him to health with the hope of returning him to the wild; on September 9, 1998, he was flown to Klettsvík, a bay on the island of Heimaey in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland; Keiko finally departed Icelandic waters with wild Orca in early August 2002. However, about three weeks later he showed up in Norway's Skålvik Fjord, apparently seeking contact with human beings and allowing children to ride on his back; died in Taknes Bay, Norway while swimming in the fjords on December 12, 2003)
Flores Ochoa, L. Observaciones de conducta de una orca en cautiverio en la Ciudad de México, 1991: p. 28 (la orca (Orcinus orca) "Keiko")
IMDb, March 16, 2017 (Keiko (1976-2003) Actor; Keiko, an orca whale, was born in 1976 and captured off the coast of Iceland in 1979. He was sold to the marine park industry, and in 1985 he arrived to Reino Aventura in Mexico City where and lived a normal life for a captive whale until 1993. In that year, he was cast as "Willy" in the movie "Free Willy." Afterwards, Life magazine made an article where it showed of the horrible conditions in in which he lived in Reino Aventura so an international pledge was started, and enough money was raised to have him sent to the Oregon Coast Aquarium; before being airlifted back to Iceland in 1998 to prepare him for a return to the wild. He was trained to survive in the wild and released in July of 2002, but he longed for human contact. He swam 870 miles; eventually ending up in Helsa, Norway in September of 2002. He was looked after by whale keepers for the last year of life, suddenly coming down with pneumonia on December 10, 2003. He died a day later; born 1976, Iceland; died 12 December 2003, Taknes Bay, Norway)
