In 1785 he entered as an apprentice to the court printer Kurzbeck whose Hebrew types and business he eventually bought. He petitioned Emperor Francis II to obtain permission to become a printer and was granted permission on the condition that he supply the court with a copy of every book he printed. He reprinted the books of Wolf Heidenheim, and, as he became prosperous, he enlarged his establishment to include Arabic, Persian, and Syriac books. He received a title of nobility for his donations to the imperial library. His most significant Hebrew works were the Bible with German translation, the Talmud, the Hebrew periodical Bikkure ha-Ittim, the works of Maimonides and Judah Löb ben-Zeeb, and Jewish prayer books and catechisms. The firm was continued by his son Franz Schmid in 1839.)
