Marvel Universe Wiki, Nov. 9, 2015 (The Human Torch is a name shared by fictional characters that appear in comic books published by Marvel Comics. Debuting in early 1939, the 1st Torch (an android, who later assumes the alias Jim Hammond) was created by writer-artist Carl Burgos & first appeared publicly in Marvel Comics #1 (Oct. 1939) - the first comic book from Timely Comics, the 1930s -1940s predecessor of the company Marvel Comics. The 2nd Torch (Johnny Storm, a human given flame powers by cosmic rays) was created in 1961 by writer Stan Lee & artist Jack Kirby as a founding member of the Fantastic Four.
