Wikipedia, March 11, 2019 (Hermann II, Count of Celje; Slovene: Herman; younger son of Count Hermann I of Celje and Catherine of Bosnia; born early 1360s (older brother Hans given birth date of c. 1363); the House of Celje were Styrian vassals of the Habsburg dukes of Styria and Carinthia estates along the Savinja river in present-day Slovenia; in 1396 Hermann fought at the side of King Sigismund of Hungary during the battle against the Ottoman Turks in the Bulgarian town of Nicopolis; the Christian coalition was defeated, and Hermann saved Sigismund's life, they escaped the battlefield on the same boat and returned to Hungary together; Sigismund rewarded Hermann by granting him lands in Zagorje along the border of the Kingdom of Croatia and the Holy Roman Empire; these hereditary grants made the Celje counts the greatest landowners in Slavonia; in 1405, Sigismund married Hermann's youngest daughter Barbara and granted extensive lands in Slavonia to his (now) father-in-law; Hermann died 13 October 1435 in Pressburg [Bratislava]; Knackfuss painting included as illustration on page; its file has caption, Battle with Turks at Nikopol; Count Herman of Zilli saves emperor Sigismund from Turkish capture)
