Biography/History noteʼAbā I, Catholicos of the Church of the East (died 552) was a religious leader, author, and teacher of biblical interpretation. Born to Zoroastrian parents, he converted to Christianity and studied at the School of Nisibis. He traveled to Palestine, Constantinople, and Egypt, and while visiting Edessa, he learned Greek. He founded the School of Seleucia-Ctesiphon. After being elected to the position of Catholicos in 540, he enacted many reforms, but was imprisoned and exiled by the Persian authorities.
