Biography/History noteGirolamo Maria Gotti (1834-1916) was an Italian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and a friar of the Discalced Carmelites, who professed in 1849 and was ordained in 1856. He then taught naval science and mathematics at the Scuola navale di Genova before he was called to Rome by his order. There, he served first as Procurator General and then Prior General, traveling throughout the Catholic provinces, including Syria. Because of this work, he was appointed as consultant for the eastern section of the Propaganda Fidei in 1884. In 1892 he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Petra in Palaestina, as well as the papal internunzio in Brazil. After several years, he returned to Rome and then served as prefect, first of the Congregatio Indulgentiarum et Sacrarum Reliquiarum, then of the Congregatio Episcoporum et Regularium. In 1902 he was made prefect of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide, a position he held and used to strongly advance missionary work until just before his death in 1916.
