Although the work stands on its own as a murder mystery, it is more accurately seen as a questioning of the meaning of "truth" from theological, philosophical, scholarly, and historical perspectives; The book, Eco's first novel, became a surprise best seller worldwide. It won the 1981 Strega Prize in Italy as well as several other international literary prizes and inspired numerous works of scholarly analysis.
