Vikipedii︠a︡ Russian, Nov. 18, 2021 (Georgiĭ Semënovich Shpagin, b. April 17, 1897 in Kli︠u︡shnikovo, Vladimirskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡, d. February 6, 1952 in Moscow; designer of the iconic PPSh-41 submachine gun [nicknamed pėpėsha or papasha], the main standard- issue automatic weapon of the Soviet Army in WWII, later used extensively by the Eastern Bloc countries; copies and variants of the weapon have been produced in vast numbers and are used to this day. It was gradually replaced by the Soviets with the famous Kalashnikov assault rifle. Shpagin also co-designed with Vasiliĭ Alekseevich Degti︠a︡rëv the ubiquitous DShK heavy machine gun, used extensively by the Red Army in WWII, and later by armies worldwide)
