Oxford Dictionary of National Biography online, viewed December 6, 2022 (article: Leybourne, W. "Biffin [Beffin; married name Wright], Sarah" (1784-1850); miniature painter; born 25 October 1784, at East Quantoxhead, Somerset; baptismal register records that Sarah was 'born without arms or legs,' a condition now known as phocomelia; aged about 13, she was bound by contract to the service of Emmanuel Dukes, a travelling showman, where she demonstrated her skills with needlework, drawing, and miniature painting using her mouth; met George Douglas, the earl of Morton in 1808, who arranged for her to study with painter William Craig, and she obtained royal patronage; after 16 years with Dukes, she was released from her contract and became an independent painter of miniature portraits with a studio in London; married William Stephen Wright in 1824, but the couple appears to have separated soon after; under the name Mrs. E.M. Wright, she exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1831 and 1832; moved to Liverpool about 1842, and her signature reverts to Miss Biffin; given name sometimes recorded as Elizabeth; she died in Liverpool, 2 October 1850)
