(Hons.) and M.Sc. in biochemistry at the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry at McGill University; worked at the Grain Research Laboratory, Ogilvie Flour Mills and the Canadian International Grains Institute, before becoming a professor in the Department of Plant Science at University of Manitoba, serving as head of the Department of Plant Science and Department of Food Science and as Associate Vice-President (Research Administration), retiring in 1993; research was mainly on the biochemistry of wheat quality and published over 300 scientific and technical articles and edited several books; member of five scientific societies including the Royal Society of Canada, and appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2003)
