Bolʹsh. sov. ėnt︠s︡ikl.: v. 30, p. 141 (Ėlista, capital of the Kalmyt︠s︡kai︠a︡ ASSR was established in 1865. It received its name from the Kalmyk work for sandy "ėlsti︠a︡". At the beginning of the 20th century Ėlista was the center of the Manychskiĭ ulus in the Chernoi︠a︡rskiĭ uezd in the Astrakhanskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡. Soviet government was established there in Feb. 1918. From 1918 to 1928 Ėlista was the center of the Ėlistinskiĭ uezd. From 1928 to 1935 and from 1957 to 1958 it was the center of the Kalmyt︠s︡kai︠a︡ Avtonomnai︠a︡ oblastʹ. It was granted city status in 1930. From 1935 to 1943 and from 1958 to present it was the capital of the Kalmyt︠s︡kai︠a︡ ASSR. During 1944 to 1957 the city had been renamed Stepnoĭ [no publs. in LC data base] and was considered part of the Stavropolʹskiĭ kraĭ)
