Biography/History noteLeonardo Antonelli (1730-1811) published writings on piety and pastoral instructions, and was a prominent member of the Catholic hierarchy in Italy. He served as Cardinal-Priest of Santa Sabina, Cardinal-Bishop of Palestrina, and Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia (e Velletri), among other offices. He specialized in civil and canon law, and worked as a diplomat and advocate of the papacy, negotiating issues of Catholic presence and hierarchy in Russia, Ireland, and France. He participated in the conclave of Venice that elected Pope Pius VII, and attended the coronation of Napoleon. However, in 1808 he was arrested and exiled from Rome by the French.
