Education: studied at Brieg, Breslau, and Bonn from 1830-33; ordained as priest at Cologne in 1834; received his doctorate in theology from the Münster Academy in 1835 with his thesis on the principles of Roman-Catholic exegesis. Teaching: professor of church history and exegesis in the Theological Seminary in Posen until 1844 and then held a similar position at Hildesheim (1844-1853); professor at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, from 1853 until his death)
