Ukr. rad. ent︠s︡ykl.: v. 12, p. 343 (Chortkiv; city in Ternopilʹsʹka oblastʹ. 1st mentioned in 1522 when it belonged to Poland. From 1672 to 1683 the city fell under Turkish rule. After the 1772 partition of Poland Chortkiv became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918. It then once again became part of Poland until 1939 when it was reunited with Soviet Ukraine)
