William "Baldy" Smith, 2022: CIP galley (William Farrar Smith, major general in the Union army; grew up on a farm in northern Vermont; admitted to the United States Military Academy in 1841; class of 1945; At the academy, “Baldy,” as his classmates called him, studied engineering as well as military courses; helped to survey western Lake Erie in 1845-46; Between 1850 and 1856, he served as assistant to the chief astronomer for the United States-Mexico Border Commission, as the engineer officer for the Department of Texas, and as an assistant professor of mathematics at West Point; From 1859 to 1861, as secretary of the Lighthouse Board, he planned the construction of four first-class lighthouses; appointed colonel of the Third Vermont on July 23, 1861; Within a few weeks, he was commissioned a brigadier general of volunteers and given command of a brigade; During the postwar years, he served as one of the police commissioners in New York City from 1875 to 1881)
