Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 476-477 ("Albert Sidney Johnson", soldier, born in Washington, Kentucky, lived in Louisville, Ky. Attended Transylvania University, then graduated in 1826 from the U. S. Military Academy. Served in the Black Hawk War and the Mexican-American War. Moved to Texas where he became the secretary of war. Resigned his commission as a brevet brigadier general as commander of the Department of the Pacific (San Francisco) when Texas seceded in 1861. Offered his services to the Confederacy in the summer of 1861 and was appointed a general in the Confederate Army on September 10, 1861. Killed during his army's attack on Brig. Gen. Grant's army at Shiloh, Tenn. on April 6, 1862.)
