Oxford DNB online, 18 Aug. 2014 (Thomas Major (1720-1799), engraver; was taught to draw and etch by Hubert Gravelot, and his first prints are dated 1744; in October 1745 he accompanied the renowned landscape engraver Jacques-Philippe le Bas to Paris, assisted him there, and was befriended by the English-born engraver André Laurent; he published several prints in Paris from his apartment in the rue St Jacques; in October 1746 he was arrested and spent three months incarcerated in the Bastille; he had returned to England by December 1748; by 1756 he had been appointed chief seal engraver to the king; from 1756 until 1797 he was also engraver to the stamp office; he was probablythe author as well as engraver and publisher of "The ruins of Pæstum"; Major was the first great English landscape engraver; he died 30 December 1799 at his home in Westminster)
