In the1880s, two museum institutions were established: Schlesisches Lansdesmuseum für Kunst und Gewerbe, later named Kaiser Franz Josef Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, and the Museum of Matice opavská. In 1921, both museums merged and thus created the Silesian Provincial Museum, and later, two other museal institutions were included: Czechoslovak Agricultural Museum (1924) and Museum of National Resistance (1927). At the end of March 1945, the Museum building was heavily damaged by a fire and a major part of the collection burned to the ashes.
