Saola conservation action plan for Lao PDR, 1999: p. i (Saola, Pseudoryx nghetinhensis; saola is a primitive member of the family Bovidae; adults weigh about 80 to 100 kg, and possess some striking physical characteristics, such as long, nearly straight horns (sometimes more than 50 cm long), white facial markings and large maxillary/preorbital glands) p. 9 (The species was first described scientifically in 1992 from horns found in hunters' houses in Vu Quang Nature Reserve, Vietnam. It was subsequently confirmed to occur in Laos, first in Nakai-Nam Theun NBCA.)
Walker's mammals of the world, 1999 (Vu Quang ox or Sao la; Artiodactyla; Bovidae; genus Pseudoryx; single species, P. nghetinhensis. The horn also looks something like those of the genus Oryx, though no immediate relationship is suspected, hence the generic name Pseudoryx)
