This species has a small population and small, fragmented subpopulations, though some are likely to number more than 250 mature individuals. The certain extirpation of the southern subspecies has been averted due to an ongoing extensive predator control operation, and numbers are now gradually increasing. The status of the northern subspecies, however, is uncertain, and though there is evidence to suggest that overall numbers may have begun to increase, populations in some areas have undergone substantial declines, and this species has been listed as Vulnerable as a precaution.)
