North American mammals, via Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History WWW site, Feb. 5, 2004 (Spilogale gracilis, Western spotted skunk. Also known as: Civet cat, hydrophobia cat, polecat. Eastern and western spotted skunks were for years thought to be one and the same species, but they differ in an important detail of the reproductive process.)
NatureServe explorer, via WWW, Feb. 5, 2004 (Spilogale gracilis - Merriam, 1890. Western Spotted Skunk. Included in S. putorius by some authors. Mead (1968) argued that gracilis and possibly leucoparia, both of which were included in S. putorius by Van Gelder (1959) and Hall (1981), are reproductively isolated from eastern populations and therefore should be considered distinct species. Jones et al. (1992) regarded gracilis and putorius as separate species.)
ITIS, Feb. 5, 2004 (Spilogale gracilis Merriam, 1890. Common name: western spotted skunk. Valid name: Spilogale putorius (Linnaeus, 1758). Current standing: invalid. Unacceptability reason: junior synonym)
