Found inNew Grove dict. of mus. online (Jan. 18, 2013) (guitar violoncello, bowed guitar; A bowed string instrument. Both J.G. Staufer (Stauffer) of Vienna and Peter Teufelsdorfer of Pest claimed to be inventors of what came to be known as the arpeggione. Both built a new instrument they called a 'bowed guitar', and both introduced their respective instruments in the spring of 1823 ...
