Found inPicton, P. The gardeners guide to growing asters, 1999: CIP galley (In Britain 'Michaelmas daisy' is the popular name applied to the many sorts of autumn-flowering Aster species and cultivars. The use of Michaelmas daisy evolved through the latter half of the eighteenth century, before which, if asters were accorded a general popular name it was 'starwort'. Now yet another name has come into popular usage: 'September flower' seems to be a recognized term for the small-flowered asters sold by florists, whatever the month. In the USA many other popular names have been attached to asters when referring to the genus as a whole: daisy and fall rose (Ohio), frost flower (Maine, New Hampshire), frost weed (Maine), goodbye summer (North Carolina), it-brings-the fall (New York Indian).)
