Except for the coat and color, the Belgian Malinois is identical in conformation to the Belgian Sheepdog and Belgian Tervuren. It is distinguished from these other breeds by its short coat, which is especially short on the head and ears, with somewhat longer hair around the neck and on the tail and the back of the thighs. In color it is similar to the Belgian Tervuren.)
Intl. encyc. dogs (Belgian Malinois ... variety of Belgian sheepdog which is known in its own country as the Chien de Berger Belge Malinois. In the U.S. efforts were made to establish the breed. At first the Malinois had to compete with the Groenendael and Tervuren under the general heading of Belgian Sheepdog. In 1959, the breeds were separated and the first two became Belgian Sheepdog and the Belgian Tervuren respectively. However, there were so few Malinois in the country that full recognition was not given until 1965 when the A.K.C. gave the breed full status and approved its standard.)
