Moths of Jamaica, via WWW, Sept. 4, 2020: Species lists > Limacodidae (The Limacodidae ('Slug Moths') are a small family of some 1,000 species worldwide, reaching their greatest diversity in the tropics. Like the Megalopygidae, adults are small to medium in size and have broad, rounded wings and hairy bodies. The larvae have a slug-like 'glassy' appearance and move with a wave-like motion (leading to their common name of 'Slug Moths') or are covered in stinging hairs. Many are of economic importance as defoliators of crop plants)
Encyclopedia of entomology, 2005 (Slug Caterpillar Moths (Lepidoptera: Limacodidae); Slug caterpillar moths, family Limacodidae, total 1,104 known species worldwide, the largest family of Cossoidea, mostly tropical and especially biodiverse in the Oriental tropics; likely world total is near 1,600 species or more. There is no established subfamily classification thus far. The family is in the superfamily Cossoidea (series Limacodiformes) in the section Cossina, subsection Cossina, of the division Ditrysia)
Wikipedia, Sept. 4, 2020 (The Limacodidae or Eucleidae are a family of moths in the superfamily Zygaenoidea or the Cossoidea; the placement is in dispute. They are often called slug moths because their caterpillars bear a distinct resemblance to slugs. They are also called cup moths because of the shape of their cocoons)
