Being condemned to suffer as refugees and exciles, a great part of them were forced to move to the remote areas of the Soviet Union and have not been able to return to their Motherland -the Ahiska region of Georgia - up to present. In the period of WWII - in 1944 declaring the Ahiska Turks as "untrustworthy people" the Soviet government committed ruthless ethnic cleansing... and exiled them to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Over 17 million Ahiska Turks lost their lives on their way of exile... The Ahiska Turks' first mass deportation to Azerbaijan took place in the 1950s.
