(Villanovan culture takes its name from the Bolognese estate where in 1853 the first of many Iron Age cemeteries in modern provinces of Bologna, Faenza, Forli and Ravenna were found; term also applied to contemporary cemeteries south of the Apennines; culture characterized by cremation burials in biconical ossuaries with incised decoration; there were no such people as the "Villanovans"; the indigenous possessors of this culture in 9th and 8th cent. Etruria may be defined as Etruscans at the Iron Age stage of their ethnic formation)
