The studies were to assist in the development of the German overseas empire, and German East Africa in particular. Each study was to include an overview of a particular region of settlement; analyses of its economy, economic relations between native and settler peoples, and public health and the prevalence of diseases among the settler populations; and an assessment of the prospects for European settlement and colonization. The studies were to be written by leading academics from Jena, Munich, Berlin, and other German universities, and were to cover British, Dutch, German, and American colonies in Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. This volume, published in 1912, is devoted to European settlement in Central America, the Caribbean, and the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia). Series title also at head of t.-p.
