Cartoon showing a map of New York City with its neighborhoods humorously labeled to reflect a local characteristic and a Central Asian name, such as Taxistan for La Guardia Airport. Text on the preliminary sketches describes the cartoon as "a guide to the tribes of New York" and speculates that the new mayor's coalition building efforts might rival the formation of a post-Taliban government in Afghanistan.
Caption label from exhibit Drawn to Purpose--Magazine Covers and Cartoons: Playing with Place Names. An unusual collaboration between two illustrators, Maira Kalman and Rick Meyerowitz, resulted in this New Yorker cover design. In the wake of 9-11, they developed their visual concept through jointly produced sketches and notes. Channeling their considerable knowledge and distilled experiences of the city's neighborhoods, they invented pseudo-national place names that suggest myriad cultural and global parallels. Their co-creation underscores the aesthetic scope and conceptual potential of cover art.
