Organized/Arranged
- Organized into the following series: I. Original Field Expeditions; II. Oral History, Acquisition Ceremony, and Products.
Summary
- The collection consists of sound recordings, film footage, photographs, and accompanying manuscript documentation assembled by brothers Bruce and Sheridan Fahnestock on two widely publicized expeditions to Oceania and Indonesia in 1940 and 1941. It documents music and dance from American Samoa, Fiji, French Polynesia (Marquesas Islands and Tahiti, Society Islands), Indonesia (Bali, Java, and Madura), Kangean Islands, and New Caledonia. It also includes film and photographs that were shot by Howard Kincheloe during several of the Fahnestocks' recording sessions. Subsequent research, oral history interviews with Margaret Fahnestock Lewis conducted by Jim McKee in 1988, documentation of an acquisition ceremony held at the Library of Congress in 1988, and related products and publications (1988-1994) complement the materials gathered during the voyage.
- Accrual received in 1996 includes a 1941 telephone book from Surabaya (Soerabaja), Indonesia in Dutch used by the Fahnestocks and a copy of a letter from Bruce Fahnestock writing from the Island of Kangean to his sister Sybil describing the process of recording a gamelan orchestra.
