Full-length caricatures of George Wallace, former Governor of Alabama, as a young boy with a bible, books, pencil, and an apple in hand and his second wife Cornelia, who in this instance plays a motherly role, cheerfully straightening his tie.
Wallace, a highly publicized and controversial figure due to his segregationist policies, ran for President as a candidate of the Independent party in 1968. He put in another bid for the Presidency in 1972, but an assassination attempt preempted his campaign. The drawing is one of several for an article entitled, "Can Wallace Be Made Respectable," which discusses his Florida primary campaign and Cornelia's influence on her husband's public image.
