No copyright information found with item. Signed, lower right: Spy. Title inscribed on verso. Caroline and Erwin Swann; British jockey Tom Loates followed in the footsteps of his three older brothers, John, Charles, and Samuel. Of the four jockey brothers, Tom was the smallest and the most successful. Loates was considered by his contemporaries as the best light-weight jockey of his time, winning some 167 races in 1889. The drawing appeared as part of the regular feature in Vanity Fair entitled "Men of the Day," which featured prominent men, accompanied by a short essay on their lives.
