[Civil War envelope showing Columbia with sword floating above marching soldiers]
[graphic].
[between 1861 and 1865]
1 print on envelope.
No known restrictions on publication.
Title devised by Library staff.
Addressed to Miss Mary J. Chambers, Toledo, Tama County, Iowa; illegible postmark.
Handwritten poem on verso: In years agone, when quiet reigned, throughout this happy land. Before rebellion had attained, so great a warlike hand. Then all went plodding straight along, in honest independence. And peace and friendship, tried and strong, were ever in attendance. But now rebellious war & strife, has set the world agoing. It takes the husband from his wife, the lover from his wooing.
