Emily turns down an offer of marriage from sailor Joe, and accepts sailor Bill. He sails away and soon forgets about his promise to Emily, leaving her to wait for six, long years. Unbeknownst to her, he marries and has a child. She waits, despite entreaties from Joe and the ridicule of her neighbors. Eventually she becomes deathly ill. When Bill returns with his wife and child, Joe forces him to make Emily's final moments happy, pretending he has returned to marry her.
