World War II cartoon shows a soldier bringing the latest news to General Douglas MacArthur who sits in his tent in the Philippines, surrounded by papers reading "Casualty Report, Ammunition Report, Strength of Enemy, [and] Food Report." The news reads "News from Washington. Lady Dancer to Help Civilian Defense at $4,600 a Year. Hollywood Movie Star to Do His Bit at $8,000 a Year. Treasury Pays Walt Disney $80,000 for a Donald Duck Film Asking People to Pay Their Income Taxes. Congress Votes Pensions for Congressmen. Many Pleasant Statements Made about General MacArthur and His Men." The soldier asks if the news should be posted, and MacArthur answers "I think not." After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, they attacked the Philippines, throwing massive forces against a small army commanded by MacArthur. Berryman contrasts the desperate situation in the Philippines with the home-front scandals dominating the news in Washington.
