Cartoon shows Charles Michelson, director of publicity for the Democratic National Committee (DNC), bandaging a battered Democratic donkey using "Post Election Salve" and bandages from a box labeled "For Ballot Box Injuries." Ed Flynn, chairman of the DNC, holds a paper reading "Bulletin. Martin to resign as G.O.P. chairman on Dec. 7 -- anniversary of Pearl Harbor." Flynn asks, "Why do you suppose Joe picked that date?" and Michelson responds, "I guess he's trying to rub it in." In the 1942 congressional elections, the Democrats lost a significant number of seats although they retained control of both houses. Satisfied with this Republican victory, Representative Joe Martin, chairman of the Republican National Committee, announced that he was resigning, returning to his job as House Minority Leader. Berryman suggests that Martin picked the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, the scene of one of the great military disasters in American history, as a sly dig at the Democrats.
