World War II cartoon shows Admiral William (Bull) Halsey in the tropics bragging to General Douglas MacArthur and Admiral Chester W. Nimitz that he had predicted that the Japanese would be beaten by Christmas. Two war bulletins read, "War bulletin, no. 1. -- Mrs. Roosevelt Reaches New Zealand" and "War Bulletin No. 2. -- Japs Flee from New Georgia." The capture of New Georgia, an island in the central Solomons, was heartening evidence of progress in the long drive to retake areas conquered by the Japanese in the early days of the war. Berryman suggests that the visit by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (widely viewed as a natural force in her own right) was further evidence of the gathering momentum of the U.S. drive. However, the prediction made by the impulsive Halsey would not come true for another two years.
